Patch Test

Cyanoacrylate is an irritant and as such it should never come into contact with the skin. I hear of many lash artist applying it to the skin, which would cause nearly anyone to have a reaction. There's more of a chance of a client reacting if you do the test on the skin but they may not react with a set of lashes as the adhesive shouldn't be touching the skin. The best way to patch test is to attach a few lashes to the outer corners of the client's eyes and wait for 72 hours which is the total amount of time it takes for the glue to cure completely.

Reaction unfortunately, even if your client has had lashes multiple times there is always a chance that they could develop an allergy to the adhesive. If this happens the best course of action is to seek medical advice where an antihistamine tablet is usually recommended and to apply a cool compress. If it's not too severe a reaction you can remove the lashes but make sure the remover does not come into contact with the skin.

It is best that you don't lash anyone who is experiencing any sort of reaction where histamine is produced. If I get clients that get severe pollen allergies it is recommend that they have a break when those allergies act up. Not only because of the chance of reaction but also because if their eyes are watering and they are rubbing them the extensions aren't going to last anyway. Poor hygiene can also result in increased sensitivity and increased likelihood of allergic reaction.

False Reactions can happen when applying the eye pad to close to the inner eye, poor hygiene, seasonal changes, seasonal allergies, if the client is sick, climates with low humidity or products they use daily. As you can see there are many situations that can create a false reaction.

Eye Pads

  • If you place the eye pads too close to the inner eye it will irritate the eyes. There are ingredients in the pads that do not belong in the eye.

Poor HYGIENE

  • Not washing the eyelash extensions nightly can create a build up of environmental pollutants thus creating false reactions. Our natural lashes are there to protect us from environmental pollutants so we must do everything we can during the time we have eyelash extensions on to prevent situations where the eyes will become irritated. Therefor cleaning the extensions nightly will help maintain a healthier environment for our eyes.

Our natural lashes are there to protect our eyes from foreign object including dirt, debris, allergens…. Now we have magnified our clients lashes by 10X+ by applying eyelash extensions to each natural lash we have also magnified the amount of foreign objects that will collect on the lashes. This is why washing them is incredibly important.

Season Changes

  • Anytime the season changes it creates new allergens. Now that your client has something foreign on their eyes its possible for them to experience a little more irritation during a season change due to the fact that the extensions will pick up more pollutants then the natural lashes would. This can also irritate ones eyes more then usual if they have seasonal allergies.

Sickness

  • The body does strange things when it is sick. The body is busy trying to maintain a healthy environment while being sick. The histamines are going crazy and fighting off foreign objects which means its possible it can attack whatever is foreign on the body such as eyelash extensions. If a client experiences a reaction during the time period when they are sick you can do a removal and try to do a patch test at a later date. IT'S always best to not mess with the eyes if irritation occurs.
